The Four Directions of Project Management

I’ve been adapting the Rational Unified Process (software development) to a micro-scale: my Sustainable Marketing clients. Drawing inspiration from the teachings of the Native American medicine wheel and Buddhist mandalas, I adopted the four stages of the process and aligned them to the four cardinal directions.

The circle is our most common symbol of completeness, movement, and harmony. The four cardinal directions are used by many ancient and modern traditions as a vehicle for guiding change and maintaining balance. The chart above illustrates the fusion of modern method and ancient wisdom. Applied to project management, they describe four stages of a project lifecycle. We use the chart to ask, "Where are we headed now?" to focus during each stage - and as a reminder, in order to keep time for all four directions in balance during the project.

Think about your meat

Folks, it’s time to start thinking about where your meat comes from, how it’s raised, and what’s being put into it. Plus, healthy meat just tastes better. Learn more at FactoryFarm.org or read the Sustainable Table Blog.

iDisk on Ubuntu (Gnome) Linux

I’ve been working on my old laptop while I’m waiting for a new keyboard for my mac. And because it’s fun to play with ubuntu linux. I found a way to add my iDisk. This is a little more geeky than the average post here, but it needed to be on the web in case someone else got stuck.

  1. Go to the Places Menu
  2. Choose Connect to Server
  3. Select Service type: WebDAV
  4. Enter Server: idisk.mac.com
  5. enter your username
  6. Leave the other fields blank, or enter in a folder (you might need your username there)
  7. Press Connect

TODO: Figure out a way to synch a local folder to the iDisk (feel free to comment!)

How to be hip and green

I’m glad that others are pointing out this sad but true fact in green marketing: If you are perceived as too green, all kinds of negative feedback loops start to happen. Your product could be associated with hippies, who (although I am a closet one) aren’t really the height of ‘cool’ anymore. Even worse, your product could be thought of as more expensive, a fate that happens to organic food frequently, and even lightbulbs. As Joel Makower says, people are looking for “green without compromise”.

What does this mean? Am I renouncing green marketing? No, I’m just pointing out that your product marketing has to be firing on all cylinders - solid marketing fundamentals - let people know the benefits of your product, but don’t make them all environmental benefits.
