Getting down to coding faster

When I reboot my mac, or need to switch projects, I had quite a few clicks and mouse movements to go through. I found it rather repetitive, so I set up a shell script (in ruby) to open Firefox, Textmate, and start the rails server.

Here’s the script. I called it open_dev_environement and used chmod 755 open_dev_environment to make it clickable and executable from the project directory.

# make sure your path to ruby is the same as above by typing 'which ruby' at the command line
app_directory_name = "persfin"

# start mongrel, using -c to change the directory
system 'mongrel_rails mongrel::start -c ~/Sites/' + app_directory_name + '&'

# change Minefield to Firefox if you're not using the latest Firefox Nightly Beta
`open -a /Applications/Minefield.app http://localhost:3000`

# make sure your textmate project file has the same name as the directory
system 'open -a TextMate ~/Sites/' + app_directory_name + "/" + app_directory_name + ".tmproj"

It would be interesting to know how to extend this to open up multiple tabs in Terminal (for example, ’script/console’) Or, if there is a better way to do these commands with osascript for applescript. If you know, let us all know in the comments.
see also Ruby may replace Applescript.

A List Apart: Articles: Sign Up Forms Must Die

A List Apart: Articles: Sign Up Forms Must Die

I’ll just come out and say this: sign-up forms must die. In the introduction to this book I described the process of stumbling upon or being recommended to a web service. You arrive eager to dive in and start engaging and what’s the first thing that greets you? A form.

We can do better. In fact, I believe we can get people engaged with digital services in a way that tells them how such services work and why they should care enough to use them. I also believe we can do this without explicitly making them fill out a sign-up form as a first step.

U.S. Junk Mail Accounts for One Third of All World Mail!

More than 100,000,000,000 pieces of junk mail are delivered each year (that’s more than 800 pieces per household). The greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the manufacturing of the 6.5 million tons of paper required for junk mail annually is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions of 3.7 million cars.

What can you do to stop it? In the United States, sign up for a service like Green Dimes or 41 pounds, or the free Mail Preference Service. If you know of international services, let us know in the comments.

Why is junk mail just bad marketing? It’s all about trust and time. To market to LOHAS, you must be trustworthy and not waste people’s time. LOHAS customers are resistant to some direct marketing techniques because they see traditional methods as intrusive. Traditional marketing relies on interruption marketing instead of permission marketing. These interruptions include Advertising and Direct Mail. Direct mail is also a waste of resources - who on earth looks forward to junk mail? Billboards and banner ads are visual pollution. In contrast, LOHAS customers respond well to recommendations from their peers, so word of mouth (WOM) marketing is very successful. For the same reason, public relations is effective because usually if someone else is writing about your product, it is newsworthy. Internet marketing is also highly effective, because of two reasons. One, it is essentially word of mouth marketing at the speed of light (email, blogs, and social networks), and two, it provides a large amount of information to prospective customers, so that they can research your marketing claims, read online reviews, and see who else is linking to you and trusting your company.

Unfortunately, as of this writing, growlnotify has some issues with Leopard and thus messages sent through it will be displayed only intermittently

Eco tips for Jeans

From our friends at UNEP sustainable consumption — simple tips for energy efficiency and “danser le Tecktonic” Today, many in the fashion sector are concerned by their impacts on the environment, due to the exploitation of raw materials, the production, the transport and the generation of waste. However, the life cycle analysis of a pair of jeans shows that the main environmental impact occurs during its use phase. Therefore, the number of times jeans are worn before being washed, the washing temperature, the use of detergents, the machine-drying and the ironing constitute many crucial steps. We also shouldn’t forget that a well maintained garment will last longer, thus generating less waste! And if you bought, organic jeans, you would be reducing pesticide usage too.

Homemade Habanero Hummous Recipe and Meeta Pockets

Homemade Habanero Hummous

  • One can chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
  • About one quarter of a jar of tahini. Officially one to two gloms of tahini. You choose how much oil.
  • A glom of habenero sauce - we used the one we got at the Marylebone London farmers market from Edible Ornamentals. It was called Inferno. She’s there every other sunday, if you’re in the neighborhood.
  • Lemon juice, and salt to taste.

We don’t have a food processor, so the best thing I did was lay out the beans on a cutting board and mashed them with a fork first, then transferring them to a bowl to mix with the rest of the ingredients.

For the meal, we used some ingredients left in the fridge. Sauteed the ground beef, spinach, and yellow pepper, with assorted spices. Fresh tomatoes, and everything all together in a hot pita pocket. Voilá le “Meeta Pocket”. Our proximity to the Edgware road ‘hood is definitely influencing our cooking at home. That and me buying a way too big bag of bulk couscous at whole paycheck.

Tomorrow we’re going to try chicken guy’s Stuffed Butternut Squash recipe.

Anyone want to check the format of this for me in hRecipe microformat? Or have other cooking suggestions? Let me know in the comments.
